Technical Abstract: In field experiments on 13 Minnesota farms, we found that University of Minnesota predictions of N availability to corn from dairy and swine manure were accurate when the manure was injected by knives or sweeps. Predictions of N availability were less accurate from broadcast-incorporated applications, presumably because ammonia losses were affected by local weather conditions before incorporation. Farmers may be able to improve the prediction of N availability from broadcast manure after considering the weather conditions that occurred between application and incorporation. However, to get the best value from manure N, direct incorporation is recommended.
