Research Project: MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF THE CAUSAL AGENTS OF CITRUS HUANGLONGBING - GENOME SEQUENCING PROJECT

Location: Subtropical Insects Research

Project Number: 6618-22000-030-21
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Jan 29, 2008
End Date: Jun 30, 2009

Objective:
To sequence the genome of Liberibacter asiaticus, the bacterium vectored by the Asian citrus psyllid and responsible for citrus greening disease. To characterize the genome.

Approach:
Adult psyllids infected by the bacterium will be homogenized and an antibody specific for the Liberibacter bacterium will be applied to this homogenate and purified. Samples of the huanglongbing pathogen will be given to either the University of Florida sequencing laboratory in Gainesville or the Los Alamos National Laboratory genomics team for sequencing.
