"Alcohol Problems in Intimate
Relationships: Identification and Intervention"
Format: Handbook
Institute: National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism (NIAAA)
This guide incorporates a wealth of information regarding
alcohol screening and brief interventions in an easy-to-read
format that includes useful graphics and reproducible screening
tools. NIAAA has developed this publication in collaboration
with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy
(AAMFT) for professionals working on the front lines of
alcohol abuse and its consequences.
Alcohol Problems in Intimate Relationships: Identification
and Intervention, A Guide for Marriage and Family Therapists
seeks to enhance the clinical skills of marriage and
family therapists and other mental health professionals
in addressing alcohol problems, while taking into consideration
the couples and family models of treatment. This handbook
is primarily for mental health professionals who have an
opportunity to work with individuals and their families
for longer sessions and/or over several visits. The appendices
in this Guide include a clinical toolbox of actual screening
tools which may be photocopied; a standard drinks graphic
chart; and a list of additional helpful resources.
This project was developed under the NIAAA, Alcohol Research
to Practice Network. Input on the content and design of
this publication was received from six mental health professionals
operating in a variety of practice settings in addition
to NIAAA and AAMFT staff and researchers. This effort supports
the Healthy People 2010 vision of "Healthy People
in Healthy Communities."
