Animal Feeding Operations (AFOs)

Where a number of animals are confined within a small area, there can be potential for contamination of ground water by animal wastes. Most of these animal feeding operations (AFOs) are classified as cattle feedlots, dairies, swine or poultry operations, but several other animal types are also raised commercially under crowded conditions. Where an especially large number of animals are concentrated at one location, the AFO is identified as a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) and is subject to EPA's permit program under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Both large and small AFOs have been documented as sources of ground water contamination.

Under the Ground Water Protection program, Region 6 has collected information on water quality, soils and other characteristics for a number of AFOs, identified various aspects of the contamination potential of these operations, and offered assistance to other programs in analyzing pollution at individual facilities.

Reports, fact sheets and other information on AFOs presented at this site are a result of research and information collection activities conducted by the Region 6 Ground Water Center and state agencies within Region 6. These items address selected topics related to the extent, causes and remediation of ground water contamination at AFOs in the Region.

State's New Class V Regulations

On April 5, 2000, new federal rules governing motor vehicle waste wells and cesspools became effective. At that time all EPA approved state underground injection control (UIC) programs were required to revise their programs to include equivalent requirements. These revisions must also be approved by EPA. Each state in Region 6 is currently in progress of revising their program and some have already adopted and are implementing state rules.
