Overview:
All session times shown are Eastern United States.

Gain an overview of terrorism. Learn the key indicators of potential terrorist activity, guidance in handling a variety of situations and how to report suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities. Topics include: chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear explosives (CBRNE); weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and improvised explosive devices (IED). Course materials include an 80-page Citizens Terrorism Awareness and Survival Manual and a free electronic newsletter containing ongoing, up-to-date information.

In this three-hour instructor-led live online training session, you participate in class through the Internet. You master the course content through real-time lectures, exercises, poll questions and slide presentations, and can join class discussions via text chat communication. Who Should Attend?
All employees whose roles and responsibilities precipitate the need for an introductory knowledge of terrorism and those who would like a better understanding about taking individual actions that can make our nation more secure.
Objectives:
  • Explain the difference between various terrorist cells and understand what to look for regarding casing and surveillance activities
  • Identify people and vehicles in reporting suspicious activities and know whom to contact and how to make an accurate report
  • Review examples and explanations about the creation and use of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear explosives (CBRNE); weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and improvised explosive devices (IED)
  • Make an individual preparedness plan to alleviate the fear associated with an attack and increase the likelihood of remaining on the job knowing that "home" is secure
  • Syllabus:
    AGENDA

    Overview: Terrorism
    • History and background of international and domestic terrorism
    • Lessons learned from past attacks; terrorist motivations
    • Reduction of racial profiling; focus on behavior and actions
    Detecting Terrorist Activities
    • Tools and techniques of the terrorist’s support cell (funding and safe houses), intelligence cell (casing and rehearsal) and operational cell (planned, physical execution) activities.
    • Photographs and firsthand examples and explanations about the creation and use of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Explosives (CBRNE), Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED).
    • Participation in casing and surveillance exercises.
    Reporting Discoveries
    • How and when to make an accurate report to appropriate authorities.
    • Use the term CYMBALS to identify person (Color of hair, eyes, skin, Year/age, Make/nationality, Body type, Attire, Looks/appearance and Sex/gender) and vehicle (Color, Year, Make, Body style, All other markings, License late, State) reporting requirements.
