Initial Environmental Evaluation/Environmental Assessments (IEE/EA), Findings of No Significant Impact (FONSI), and Related Environmental Documents
Activities planned by the U.S. Antarctic Program in science support, construction, operations, logistics, and facilities maintenance are
subjected to environmental analysis specific to the proposed action or
governed by a program wide environmental impact statement issued in 1980 and revised in 1991.
More than 120 specific environmental documents, which are public, have been issued. Every scientist proposing research in Antarctica must analyze the environmental impact of the proposed project. NSF carefully reviews these proposals and does not give approval unless the projects (sometimes modified for this purpose) comply with antarctic environmental standards.
