Key Point #1: Firefighting Resources
This key area deals with being prepared for future fire seasons, and includes staffing, training, equipment and resources, and facilities such as airtanker bases. Regional Office Fire & Aviation Management staff, Forest Supervisors, and Fire Management Officers (FMOs) determined needs for the Most Efficient Level (MEL) of suppression resources, including firefighters, engines, aircraft, and other personnel.

**The Intermountain Region (R4) is achieving 95% MEL fire fighting production capability with the current resources they have on board. Production capability is achieved with the temporary substitution of some high production resources as units transition to their planned MEL. These resources include dozers and engines. The National Fire Plan is making a difference. There are more trained and equipped firefighters on board for the Department of the Interior and the USDA Forest Service than during the fire season of 2000. Nationwide, there were 11,474 Federal wildland firefighters in 2000, in 2002 there are 17,633.
