Intercultural Cancer Council

The Intercultural Cancer Council (ICC) promotes policies, programs, partnerships, and research to eliminate the unequal burden of cancer among racial and ethnic minorities and medically underserved populations in the United States and its territories.

The ICC, established in 1995, is a 65-member nonprofit multicultural forum that addresses the unequal burden of cancer in ethnic minority and medically underserved populations. Baylor College of Medicine assumes responsibility for fiscal and organizational management for the ICC. The ICC's multicultural, multidisciplinary membership includes individuals whose work includes cancer prevention, treatment, research, advocacy, and survivorship for minorities and medically underserved communities. The ICC provides a forum to identify health disparities, shared problems, develop collaborative solutions, promote new partnerships, offer electronic networking, and provide news and information services. With support from its partners, the ICC convenes a biennial conference, the Biennial Symposium on Minorities, the Medically Underserved and Cancer, first held in 1987. The primary purposes of this symposium are to increase awareness and enhance the knowledge base of health care providers, researchers, laypersons, and survivors in prevention, treatment, and early detection; and to promote culturally competent cancer care and ethnically balanced research for minorities and medically underserved communities.

Partnership Activities

Previous funding provided ICC with the opportunity to develop a national intercultural cancer communications network. This communications network links health professionals, organizations, and individuals who work with underserved communities and provides them with information about cancer prevention and control among those populations. The ICC National Network was launched in February 1999 at the ICC National Network Meeting and Educational Forum. DCPC uses the National Network as a vehicle for the disseminating information and for gathering feedback from member organizations and individuals on their cancer prevention experience with ethnic minority and medically underserved communities.

The ICC supports CDC's Comprehensive Cancer Control (CCC) Programs through local and intercultural CCC networks to address the needs of ethnic minority and medically underserved communities, and identifies opportunities for education and training workshops. The ICC has also been a sponsor for CDC's 2001 and 2003 Cancer Conferences.
