Fact of the Day

The 65 and older age group is projected to increase to 88.5 million in 2050, more than doubling the number in 2008 (38.7 million). The 85 and older population is expected to more than triple, from 5.4 million to 19 million between 2008 and 2050.

By 2050, the minority population (everyone except for non-Hispanic, single-race whites) is projected to be 235.7 million out of a total US population of 439 million. The nation is projected to reach the 400 million population milestone in 2039.

Population

County Population Estimates by Age, Sex, Race, and Hispanic Origin: July 1, 2007. Internet tables showing estimates at the county level.

State and County Housing Unit Estimates: July 1, 2007. Updated estimates of the nation's housing stock at the national, state, and county levels for 2007.

Families and Living Arrangements: 2007. The latest look at our nation's married-couple and single-parent families, stay-at-home mothers and fathers, people who live alone, children who live with grandparents, and more. The reports are from the Current Population Survey (PDF and online data tables) and include breakdowns by age, race and ethnic origin, as well as personal earnings and dependence on public assistance.

Fertility of American Women: 2006. This is the first Census Bureau report on fertility patterns of American women that uses data from the American Community Survey, making it the first to include state-by-state comparisons of fertility characteristics. Data from the Current Population Survey are also included, permitting historical comparisons.

National Population Projections: 2008-2050. Internet tables showing projections of the United States resident population by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin.

Economic Census and Surveys

2006 Nonemployer Statistics. Report provides data for the US, state, metro area, and county on the number of establishments and sales or receipts of businesses without paid employees that are subject to federal income tax. Available in PDF and as online data tables.

Older Worker Profiles. Report (it will be released for each of over 30 states) provides a detailed picture of workers 55 and older at the county and metropolitan area levels for 2004. Based on data from the Local Employment Dynamics program, the report highlights the age of the states' work force, job gains, and losses, industries in which older workers are concentrated, job stability, and earnings. Population

Geographical Mobility: 2007. Data tables show the moving patterns of people in the United States, the differences in the extent and types of movements, the characteristics of movers, regional migration patterns, and the reasons people move. Data come from the Current Population Survey.

Income, Poverty, Health Insurance Coverage and American Community Survey: 2007. On August 26, 2008, the Census Bureau will hold a news conference to release the consolidated report on 2007 income, poverty, and health insurance coverage for the nation, based on the Current Population Survey. American Community Survey income and poverty tabulations pertaining to states and areas with 65,000 or more residents will be released simultaneously on the Internet.

School Enrollment: 2006. Discusses school enrollment levels and trends in the population aged 3 and older. Report based on data collected in 2006 from the American Community Survey and the Current Population Survey.

What It's Worth: Field of Training and Economic Status: 2004. Series of tables from the Survey of Income and Program Participation examining the relationship between field of training and monthly earnings.

Fact of the Day

Nonemployers are Big Business

In 2006, more than 20.7 million U.S. businesses without a payroll (nonemployers) had a total revenue of more than $970 billion. Three economic sectors accounted for almost half of all nonemployer business receipts: real estate and rental and leasing ($193 billion); construction ($159 billion); and professional, scientific and technical services ($124 billion). About 7.9 million businesses were in these three sectors, representing nearly 38 percent of all nonemployer businesses. For more data on nonemployers, be sure to check out our web site.
