Our conference partners are the American Library Association, Office for Literacy and Outreach Services; Laubach Literacy International; the National Even Start Association; the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy; and the United States Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education. The conference will bring together literacy professionals, volunteers, students, tutors, funders, and policy-makers for networking and workshops on literacy issues. The keynote speaker at the annual banquet on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. will be Dr. Randolph D. Smoak, Jr., president of the American Medical Association. The opening night keynote speaker is Barbara Hambly, best-selling author and former president of the Science Fiction Writers of America. LVA Spokesperson Wally Amos will emcee Friday's Student Recognition Breakfast, which will be hosted by Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. Featured speakers include Wally Amos, Michael Scott Karpovich, Nancy Pearl, and Patricia Wagner. Workshop topics include family literacy, health literacy, fundraising, training, board development, ESOL, and more! Pre-conference session topics include LVA's Training of Trainers; 50/50 Management; family literacy program development; board development; fund development, risk management; technology; and student leadership. Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA), Inc. is a national network of local volunteer literacy programs that assist adults and their families to acquire literacy skills through professionally trained and managed volunteer tutors. The LVA network consists of more than 340 community programs in 42 states and the District of Columbia in which volunteers are trained to tutor adults and their families.
