Dr. Edward Sondik is the Director of the
National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). NCHS, part of the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, is the principal health statistics agency of the United
States with responsibility to monitor the Nation's health. At NCHS, Dr. Sondik
directs a wide-ranging program of research and analysis in health statistics and
epidemiology. Dr. Sondik also serves as senior advisor to the Secretary of Health and
Human Services on health statistics, providing technical and policy advice on statistical
and health information issues. Before Dr. Sondik's appointment as NCHS Director in April
1996, he was Acting Director, National Cancer Institute (NCI). Earlier at NCI he served as
Associate Director of the Surveillance Program and as Deputy Director of the Division of
Cancer Prevention and Control. He has a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford
University.
