My area of research is fisheries biology, primarily in lotic systems.
For my research project, I am interested in detecting the fragmentation
effects culverts produce on small fish populations. A culvert is
a connection conduit, found at the intersection of a road and a
small stream, which allows continuous flow of water throughout the
year. From an engineering perspective, a "good" culvert
is one that effictively accomplishes this task with a minimum of
cost and maintenance. However, from a biological perspective, a
"good" culvert is one that does not stop the "flow"
of biological material through a continuous habitat matrix such
as a stream. I am working in upland streams located within the boundaries
of the Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont and the White Mountain
National Forest in New Hampshire. The streams are located in four
different basins of the Connecticut River Watershed. My goal is
to help aid aquatic habitat planning and restoration in eastern
National forests.
