Tom's interests include mammal ecology, behavior, and their community
interactions. While serving in a technical role, he has conducted
studies examining the roles small mammals play in avian-nest predation,
population density estimation techniques (for M.S.), and potential
predator/prey relationships between shrews and amphibians. Tom has
served as a consultant with the Massachusetts Natural Heritage &
Endangered Species Program, identifying habitat for the northern
water shrew and southern bog lemming, both state-listed species
of special concern; and has served as guest editor for both the
Northeastern Naturalist and Southeastern Naturalist.
CURRENT PROJECTS
- Investigating mechanisms of camera-effect on nest predators.
- Developing techniques for determing time-of-predation for turtle
nests.
- Developing techniques for the detection of northern water shrews.
