Volunteers / Interns

volunteerVolunteers are an important part of the operation of the Jordan River National Fish Hatchery. They can assist hatchery staff in the many aspects of fish culture that are involved in rearing and releasing lake trout for the Great Lakes . These could include feeding fish, cleaning tanks and raceways, sample counting and other activities. In addition, volunteers could assist in facilities maintenance, landscaping or public outreach activities (meeting and greeting the public and giving tours). Volunteers are also needed to aid in implementing a "Friends Group" for the hatchery.

Volunteers can be persons from communities near the hatchery or they can be from other parts of the country.

In addition to volunteers, there are two types of intern programs available at the Jordan River National Fish Hatchery.

The Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP)

The STEP provides high quality students for temporary work in the Federal Service; supports a diverse workforce, provides exposure to public service and promotes hands-on experience. This program applies to all occupational groups (Professional, Administrative, Technical, Clerical and Wage Grade), but particularly positions that relate to biology. STEP ExperienceThe Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)

The SCEP provides high quality students to work for the Federal Service; supports a diverse workforce, provides exposure to public service and promotes education. This program applies to all occupational groups (Professional, Administrative, Technical, Clerical and Wage Grade), but particularly biologist and natural resource positions that promote our agency mission. Students work for the Service either when they are not taking classes or part-time while taking classes. After working 640 hours for the Service and completing their degree, they may be converted into permanent federal employees.
