ALBANY, N.Y. -- Operating hours for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) toll free registration line and the disaster information Helpline are changing as of Monday, November 22.
According to Marianne C. Jackson, federal coordinating officer for New York, both lines will be available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, but will be closed on Sunday.
In addition, the lines will not be in operation on Thanksgiving, November 25, but will reopen on Friday, November 26.
The toll-free registration line was established for residents and business owners in Albany, Dutchess, Essex, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rensselaer, Rockland, Schenectady, Ulster and Westchester counties to apply for disaster assistance because of Tropical Storm Floyd.
Renters, homeowners and business owners with flood damage from the storm in the designated counties may apply for assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free registration line at 1-800-462-9029. People with hearing- or speech-impairments may call TDD 1-800-462-7585.
Jackson said, "We've extended the deadline for applications through December 17, but we want everyone who had any losses or damage from the storm to call and apply for assistance, as soon as possible."
"After they register," Edward F. Jacoby, Jr., state coordinating officer, said, "applicants should utilize the FEMA Disaster Information Helpline, 1-800-525-0321, (TDD 1-800-660-8005) for checking the status of their applications or for getting additional information. Both the registration line and the Helpline will continue to operate Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through December 17."
