Research Project: SEQUENCING, CLONING AND CHARACTERIZATION OF A 2007 VIETNAM PRRSV ISOLATE

Location: Virus and Prion Diseases of Livestock

Project Number: 3625-32000-088-23
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Sep 15, 2008
End Date: Sep 15, 2009

Objective:
Objective 1. Genetic analysis of 2007, Vietnam PRRSV isolates. The purpose of this objective is to determine the complete nucleotide sequence of 3 Vietnam PHFD PRRSV isolates and compare them with other PRRSV isolates from the U.S. as well as from around the world. Phenotypic characterization of the Vietnam isolates will also be completed. Objective 2. Infection of pigs with a 2007 Vietnam PRRSV isolate. The purpose of this objective is to evaluate the clinical effect of a Vietnam PRRSV isolate in young pigs and compare it with a well characterized U.S. high- and low-pathogenic PRRSV strain.

Approach:
Objective 1 will involve growing the PRRSV isolate for genetic analysis that will involve sequencing the viral genome. Objective 2 will involve animal studies in which pigs will be infected with the Vietnam isolate and compared to pigs infected with a North American PRRSV strain that causes a severe disease, and to a PRRSV that does not induce a severe disease.
