NRC PROPOSES $3,250 CIVIL PENALTY AGAINST KANSAS CITY, MO., |
||
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is proposing a $3,250 fine for Research Medical Center, of Kansas City, Mo., for willful violations of agency requirements involving the control of nuclear materials. NRC officials identified a violation of NRC requirements during a routine inspection. The violation involved the radiation safety officer’s willful failure to ensure NRC requirements were implemented and to inform the company’s management regarding the facility’s non-compliance with NRC regulations. It also involved management’s failure to implement proper oversight of activities to meet federal regulations. The company took immediate actions, within a day of being informed of the failure, to correct the problems, which included a system being installed and a program developed that complied with the NRC requirements. The company has also committed to heightened management oversight of the radiation safety program. In addition to the proposed fine, the violation may result in increased inspections of the facility by the NRC to emphasize the importance of complying with NRC regulations and to encourage the company to identify and solve problems. Details of the violations are being withheld to ensure the facility’s safety, security and control of nuclear materials information. The NRC letter to the Research Medical Center has been made publicly available and can be accessed from the NRC Website at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html. The ADAMS accession number is ML081560201. |
