Research Project: KARNAL BUNT COOPERATIVE RESEARCH AT CIMMYT

Location: Plant Science and Entomology Research

Project Number: 5430-21000-006-14
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 01, 2008
End Date: Jul 31, 2013

Objective:
The objectives of this cooperative research project are: 1) Screen wheat mapping populations, near-isogenic lines, and advanced breeding lines for KB resistance in the field; and 2) Identify KB resistance genes and molecular markers for KB resistance genes.

Approach:
Resistant varieties are an important component of an integrated strategy to control KB. The use of resistant varieties is the most economical, sustainable, and long lasting means of control. Dedicated KB screening nurseries at CIMMYT will be used to test experimental wheat breeding lines, near isogenic lines, and mapping populations for resistance to KB. Molecular markers for resistance genes will be identified and tested.
