Research Project: ANTHRACNOSE STALK ROT RESISTANCE FROM EXOTIC MAIZE GERMPLASM

Location: North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station, Ames, Iowa

Project Number: 3625-21000-050-07
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 15, 2006
End Date: Mar 31, 2009

Objective:
Develop temperate adapted inbreds with anthracnose stalk rot resistance and good yield potential from GEM germplasm.

Approach:
This project is a multi-year effort to develop lines with anthracnose resistance and high yield that will be used to broaden the germplasm base. Lines identified from the previous conducted research will be increased in 15 row plots and notes taken for phenotypic release preparation. A second generation of random mating will be conducted for the newly created population derived from three GEM families. Approximately 50 S1 families each from two GEM families will be planted for selfing, inoculation, and selection. The same families will be planted for making top crosses for testing in 2007.
