The Plant Gene Expression Center is a unique collaboration of the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Plant & Microbial Biology Department of the University of California.  PGEC research leaders are members of the PMB Department at UC Berkeley. 

 

The Plant Gene Expression Center (PGEC) conducts fundamental research in plant molecular biology.  Essential genes are identified, isolated, and their function determined.  Research is being conducted to elucidate the components of the signal transduction pathways responsible for the perception of environmental and cellular cues. Research programs include heavy metal tolerance, disease resistance, light perception, ripening, vegetative growth, and reproduction.

Mission:

To provide the means to control plant gene expression to develop plant germplasm with inherent increased productivity and quality characteristics.To develop these means by: generating knowledge of the biochemical steps and developmental mechanisms responsible for plant productivity and quality characteristics; exploring the biochemical basis of the genetic phenomenon of heterosis combining ability and inheritance; developing and characterizing genetically manipulated plant cells; correlating the biochemical steps and mechanisms with genetic control; developing and characterizing plant genetic vectors; and developing and characterizing selection systems for identification and recovery of genetic variance at both the cellular and whole plant levels.
