14th/84th Regiment: In December 1861, New York
state authorities changed the designation of the 14th Brooklyn Militia to the
84th
New York Volunteers (Phisterer, Volume 4,
pp. 2929-2930).
The soldiers of the unit reportedly protested the change, and C.V. Tevis (The
History of the Fighting Fourteenth, Baltimore, MD: Butternut and Blue,
1994, originally published 1911, p. 187) asserts that Federal military authorities
confirmed the
unit's
original designation.
20th/80th Regiments: The 20th Regiment of the New York State
Militia ("Ulster Guard") served for three months (May-August 1861)
before being reorganized as the 80th New York Volunteers (September 1861-January
1866). Another 20th New York Regiment ("Southern Tier Rifles") was
organized in May 1861 and mustered out in June 1863. See Phisterer,
Volume 2, p. 608; Volume 4, p. 2860.
