Employment
Covered Employment
The number of workers covered by Hawaii Employment Security Law, who worked during or received pay for the payroll period which includes the 12th of the month, reported by place of work (job count) and classified by industry based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Manual. Some student hires, not covered under Unemployment Insurance, are excluded from this figure but are included in Job Counts by Industry. Because it includes all covered employers in the state, it is considered as the universe population and is often the basis of sampling by other statistical programs. The information is produced quarterly and annually.
Employer Size Tables
Classifies employers/reporting units by the number of employees, by county and by major industry. See Covered Employment.
Employment by Sex and Race for Affirmative Action
Labor force and occupational information by sex and race are compiled for employers working on affirmative action programs, as required for government contract compliance. Employers having contracts of at least $50,000 and with 50 or more employees are required to develop an affirmative action plan to insure equal employment opportunities for women and minorities in their business establishments. Labor force data are derived from the 2000 Census of Population (U.S. Census Bureau) and are updated annually, by using 2000 Census ratios. Occupational information is compiled from the Census 2000 Special Equal Employment Opportunity File Tabulation . Data are available for the State of Hawaii, Honolulu MSA, and counties.
For more information regarding affirmative action policies, go to the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Program (OFCCP) website at http://www.dol.gov/esa/ofccp/index.htm or contact the OFCCP in Honolulu at (808) 541-2933.
Job Counts by Industry
The number of non-agricultural employees by establishment. Workers on an establishment payroll who are on paid sick leave, on paid holiday or paid vacation or who work during any part of the pay period including the 12th of the month are counted, regardless of status. Persons on the payroll of more than one establishment during the pay period are counted in each establishment which reports them, whether the duplication is due to turnover or multiple job holding. It is a monthly estimate of jobs based on a sample. About 1500 employers who employ approximately half of all workers in Hawaii participate in this monthly survey following Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) guidelines. Released monthly, it is a useful measure of the health of the economy.
