Research Project:
IMPROVING IRRIGATION PRACTICES AND IRRIGATED CROP PRODUCTION IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Location: Cropping Systems and Water Quality Research
Project Number: 3622-13610-002-01
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 15, 2006
End Date: Jun 30, 2009
Objective:
1. Develop methods for incorporating field variability into irrigation management decisions; 2. Develop management guidelines for an irrigated, twin-row production system; 3. Evaluate effectiveness of automated soil moisture sensors for irrigation scheduling; 4. Evaluate irrigation pumping plant efficiencies on Missouri farms; 5. Develop database of optimal cotton seeding rates for use with variable-rate planting; 6. Develop and test methods for screening currently grown cotton cultivars for tolerance to waterlogging; 7. Develop rapid screening technique for evaluating soybean cultivar tolerance to waterlogging for use in cultivar development programs; 8. Evaluate the potential water savings for rice production through sprinkler irrigation.
Approach:
Scientists from both ARS and MU conduct crop production research in southeast Missouri relating to irrigated crop production and irrigation management. This research will include studies on agricultural experiment stations as well as on cooperator's farms. Project results will be documented in scientific and extension publications and will be presented at a variety of national, regional, and local meetings.
