Geology

The formations at Spring Canyon Dam are the same as at Soldier Canyon and Dixon Canyon except that the axis of the dam extends between the outcrops on the middle Dakota sandstone instead of the upper sandstone.  The result is that a greater proportion of the foundation rock is Morrison shale and that the upper shale of the Dakota Formation is practically all outside of and downstream of the embankment area.  Further differences are that the cutoff trenches will be partly in Morrison shales instead of entirely in Dakota formation as at Soldier Creek and Dixon Canyons.
