Research Project: DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH PROTEIN MEAL WITH LOW PHYTATE

Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research

Project Number: 6645-21000-026-43
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 22, 2008
End Date: Feb 28, 2009

Objective:
1. Identify MG IV-V lines with high yield and low phytate and/or higher protein and low phytate. 2. Develop populations for additional selection that are segregating for these composition traits and for good agronomic traits.

Approach:
Select breeding lines in the F4 generation and test individual plants for protein composition, phytic acid content, and oil composition (if appropriate). Grow progeny from plants that have the targeted traits in single-row plots to determine agronomic performance and disease reaction. Select desirable lines for evaluation in replicated plots at multiple locations in Maryland to determine yield and adaptation. Advance productive lines for regional testing to determine broad adaptation and potential for release as new cultivars.
