Research Project: WINTER NURSERY SUPPORT IN PUERTO RICO

Objective:
Provide off-season winter nursery services in support of Better Bean Initiative (BBI) soybean breeders, in particular the capability of making cross-pollinations as needed.

Approach:
Winter nursery is being operated and managed in Isabela, PR by a federal employee on a term appointment. Employee will plant materials from BBI plant breeders as needed; manage lighting so that cross-pollinations are possible during the flowering period; grow two or more generations in the Puerto Rico environment as requested by each BBI breeder; sample leaf tissue for DNA isolation as needed; and be available for other types of research as the need arises.
