Abstract: The online electronic
catalog of the Wirtz Labor Library comprises identifying bibliographic records
for Library holdings in all media and formats. Access is provided by author,
title and keyword and each record includes descriptive information relative to
medium, format, location and other identifying characteristics. Metadata
records are included in the catalog which reference and link to virtual
resources outside the Library’s physical site. Coverage is comprehensive
for Library holdings from approximately from 1975 forward, based on
publisher’s imprint &/or DOL acquisition. Select items and select
segments of the pre-1975 holdings are also included, the usual selection
criteria being historical importance &/or uniqueness and user demand. The
online catalog constitutes a major component of the Library’s Integrated
Library System (ILS). The online catalog is updated daily, on regular business
days. The online catalog is accessible through the Internet.
Purpose: The online catalog provides access to the holdings of the
Wirtz Labor Library and certain remote virtual resources cataloged as metadata
records. Catalog records provide descriptive as well as access information
documented in accordance with prescribed standards. The online catalog and card
catalog (pre-1975) collectively comprise the Wirtz Labor Library’s primary
collection management tool. The online catalog serves as a virtual access tool
to DOL officers and staff as well as to individual and institutional Library
users outside the Department.

catalog of the Wirtz Labor Library supports all DOL agencies by providing
information access.
