Safety in Numbers Conferences

The purpose of the Safety in Numbers Conferences is to improve transportation safety by providing the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and other members of the transportation community with more accurate and timely safety data, which will allow the risks of transportation in the United States to be identified, quantified, and substantially reduced. The first Safety In Numbers Conference was held in April 2000, to gather input and develop an action plan for improving the quality of safety data. As a result, the Safety Data Action Plan was drafted by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), under the direction of the DOT Safety Council. The plan contains ten research projects aimed at improving the quality of DOT's safety data. BTS, with input from all modes and other experts, has developed implementation plans for each of the research projects outlined in the Safety Data Action Plan. At the second Safety in Numbers Conference, held in January 2002, BTS reported on the implementation plans and received invaluable input from stakeholders.
