Welcome to the National Park Service, National Capital Region, Regional Archeology Program. The Regional Archeology Program serves the archeological needs of national parks in portions of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and all of the District of Columbia. Archeology is the study of the tangible remains of past human societies. Most people think of archeology as the study of exotic people in exotic places. However, the vast majority of archeology explores the history of ordinary folks like ourselves. This web site provides an opportunity for you to learn more about the role played by the National Park Service in the excavation and preservation of the public's archeological resources, our nation's patrimony.
