Research Project: EVALUATION OF ARONIA GERMPLASM FOR USE AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO INVASIVE EXOTIC LANDSCAPE SHRUBS

Objective:
The primary objective of this work is to evaluate Aronia germplasm for use as an alternative to invasive exotic landscape shrubs. A secondary objective is to consider the germplasm for use as a fruit crop and for nutraceutical potential.

Approach:
Evaluate Aronia accessions for genetic relatedness (AFLP), ploidy, flower and fruit characteristics, summer and fall foliage characteristics, and growth aspects. A minimum of 30 Aronia accessions representing three species will be evaluated.
