Research Project: DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES FOR VOMITOXIN (DON) IN WHEAT Project Number: 0500-00053-001-94
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 05, 2004
End Date: May 04, 2009

Objective:
Provide vomitoxin (deoxynivalenol or DON) analyses on approximately 5000+ wheat samples for about 20 scientists from North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska.

Approach:
Use the gas chromatography/electron capture (GC/ECD) method developed at the Department of Veterinary Services at North Dakota State University for vomitoxin analysis, which is quite selective. As a secondary system, use the GC/MS system for trimethylsilyl derivatives of about 20 trichothecenes that are produced by Fusarium sp. Use this multi-mycotoxin screen to guard against other mycotoxins, besides vomitoxin, being in the final varieties of wheat and barley.
