Research Project: LARGE WOODY DEBRIS STRUCTURES IN STREAM CHANNELS

Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit

Project Number: 6408-13000-018-19
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 01, 2005
End Date: Aug 31, 2010

Objective:
To increase general and fundamental knowledge related to the use of large woody debris and woody debris structures for channel stability and enhancement of aquatic habitat. To develop a unique data base for use in predicting the forces on woody debris and woody debris structures in channels for use in design of structures and development of appropriate management plans and procedures.

Approach:
ARS-NSL, ARS-HERU, and OSU will work together to document the present state of the science related to use of woody debris structures in channels and the forces associated with structure failure and debris transport. Data describing the forces on specific woody debris elements will be obtained in outdoor laboratory facilities using existing channels, instrumentation and equipment modified as mutually agreed upon during conduct of the research. Data will be available to all cooperators for analysis and reports generated as appropriate. The cooperation brings together the unique facilities and expertise not available to cooperators individually.
