PHIN Communities of Practice

PHIN CoP Descriptions

There are currently five PHIN Communities of Practice, each are described below. Each Community is open to everyone, easy to join, and your level of commitment is up to you. If you are interested in joining a PHIN Community, please complete the online form on the Join a PHIN CoP page.

Enterprise Architecture

The Enterprise Architecture Community of Practice (EA CoP) brings together PHIN enterprise architects to work collaboratively with the programmatic, informatics and IT communities to share ideas, find solutions, and build upon the foundation of enterprise architecture. This EA CoP seeks to increase the use of enterprise architecture in the decision making processes within PHIN while facilitating the introduction of best practices (i.e., SOA and collaborative development). Members will have the opportunity for continual learning, greater access to enterprise architecture expertise, and personal development.

InfoLinks

The Information Links Community of Practice (InfoLinks CoP) seeks to build, improve, and promote Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) within public health systems. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) funded community of practice is supported by CDC and the Public Health Informatics Institute (PHII) and has over 21 state, local, territorial, and other public health members. The InfoLinks CoP invites you to visit their website at http://infolinksproject.org/.

Electronic Laboratory Reporting

The Electronic Laboratory Reporting Community of Practice (ELR CoP) brings together PHIN stakeholders nationwide involved in defining, implementing, maintaining, evaluating, and evolving electronic lab reporting. This community collaboratively develops knowledge, innovation, and best practices through discussion of current obstacles in ELR and sharing lessons learned to facilitate the modernization of public health surveillance. Additional areas to be considered for inclusion in the scope of the CoP include messaging for lab orders and specimen tracking.

Outbreak Management

The Outbreak Management Community of Practice (OM CoP) brings together all PHIN members who are engaged in or have an interest in public health outbreak management. The OM CoP seeks to promote collaboration among all outbreak management practitioners including CDC program staff, local outbreak investigators, and emergency operations personnel to increase the understanding and capabilities of managing outbreaks. Members will be provided the opportunity to set the direction of specific PHIN OM applications, e.g., OMS, share ideas and best practices, and plan and drive the strategic direction for informatics support of Outbreak Management.

Vocabulary and Messaging

The Public Health Vocabulary Community of Practice (PHVCoP) has facilitated dialogue and problem solving around vocabulary development, usage, and distribution within public health since 2006. PHVCOP members invite their messaging colleagues to gather in a community setting to share ideas, identify collaborative efforts, and begin to develop solutions to solving common public health vocabulary and messaging challenges.
