Research Project: WHEAT APPLIED GENOMICS

Location: Cereal Crops Research

Project Number: 5442-21000-033-04
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Dec 01, 2005
End Date: Nov 30, 2009

Objective:
The main objective is to map, validate, and implement markers for traits prioritized by the wheat industry. We will integrate resources from both public wheat breeding programs and ARS high throughput genotyping labs. Specific objectives will be to: (1) map QTLs controlling important agronomic traits, (2) validate markers closely linked to the QTLs, and (3) implement marker assisted selection in public wheat breeding programs.

Approach:
We will screen 1,500 SSR markers on 46 breeding lines contributed from 17 wheat breeders in the country in the first year and will assist in mapping SSR and SNPs to link important agronomic traits using mapping populations generated in the northern Great Plains states. Marker-assisted selection will be carried out in collaboration with wheat breeders in the northern Great Plains states. In addition, we will collaborate with the GrainGenes staff to develop a database to deposit genotyping data generated in this project.
