Research Project: BARLEY CAP: LEVERAGING GENOMICS, GENETICS, AND BREEDING FOR GENE DISCOVERY AND BARLEY IMPROVEMENT

Location: Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research

Project Number: 1907-21000-031-03
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Apr 01, 2007
End Date: Mar 31, 2009

Objective:
1. High-Throughput Marker Development - Develop a 3,000 SNP map of barley. 2. Worldwide Web Access - Develop web portal and database for access to data. 3. Genes and Traits - Map QTL using association genetics in breeding germplasm. 4. Superior Germplasm - Develop elite barley using marker-assisted selection. 5. Education and Outreach - Educate stakeholders in the use of genomics technologies for gene discovery and crop improvement.

Approach:
Integrate genetic and trait data to gain access to the genes that control important biological, agronomic, and quality traits. Use single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) markers to conduct high-throughput mapping in barley. A densely saturated genetic map will provide markers for the breeding programs, initiation points for map-based cloning and scaffolds for genome sequencing.
