Construction and demolition (C&D) debris is a complex waste stream generated during building construction, renovation, and demolition projects. Components of C&D debris include materials such as concrete, wood, brick, metals, wallboard, and roofing shingles.

There are many ways to reduce the environmental impact of building projects, and at the same time, reduce project expenses. In recent years, several deconstruction initiatives and materials reuse projects have been conducted in the greater New York metropolitan area. For more information on these efforts, see Region 2 Regional Initiatives.

In addition, many organizations provide information on reducing and recycling waste at construction and demolition sites. Materials exchange programs also facilitate the reuse of C&D materials by collecting reusable materials and distributing them for reuse in new construction projects. For more information, see Region 2 Related Links.
