Mercury

Mercury is a naturally occurring element that is present throughout the environment. People in Region 2 are mainly exposed to mercury when they consume fish and shellfish containing methylmercury.

The Environmental Protection Agency, along with state and local agencies, are working together to reduce the amount of mercury in the environment. In Region 2, both New Jersey and New York issue fish consumption advisories and have developed a Mercury Task Force to ensure public safety. If you have a mercury spill, it should be treated seriously regardless of the quantity.

For basic information about mercury, its health effects, how to handle spills and to learn what EPA is doing to reduce mercury emissions, select from the topics listed to the right or visit the national mercury home page.
