Regional Brownfields

Brownfields are abandoned, idled, or under-used industrial and commercial facilities at which expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination. EPA's Brownfields Program converts these industrial and commercial facilities into areas of greater community, economic or aesthetic value. Several former brownfields have become important cultural centers.

Many communities in our nation have grappled with the challenge of unsightly and unused industrial and commercial facilities. Region 2's implementation of the Brownfields Economic Redevelopment initiative is a multi-faceted program providing technical, legal and information resources and direct assistance to regional brownfields stakeholders, including state agencies, counties, cities, tribes and community organizations. The Agency's effort falls into four broad categories:

Brownfields Grant Projects
EPA has funded more than 130 Brownfields Grant Projects nationwide as a part of the Brownfields Economic Redevelopment Initiative.

Clarifying Liability and Cleanup Issues
EPA has announced a variety of guidance and other initiatives to help remove some of the uncertainties often associated with brownfields properties.

Partnerships and Outreach

EPA is committed to working with stakeholders including state agencies, counties, cities, tribes and community organizations to implement the Brownfields Action Agenda.

Job Development and Training
EPA promotes environmental workforce training programs in brownfields communities throughout the country. EPA, local organizations and community colleges have established partnerships to develop long-term plans for fostering workforce development.
