About Underground Storage Tanks and Contacts
The Underground Storage Tank (UST) Program, authorized under Subtitle I of
the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), works to prevent the release
of petroleum and other products stored in underground tanks. Such releases are
the number one source of contamination of ground waters in the United States.
Region 4 UST Program efforts include providing technical
assistance and outreach, conducting compliance and enforcement, and building
State capacity to allow delegation of regulatory responsibility. The Leaking
Underground Storage Tank (LUST) Program works with States and Tribes to clean up
known releases from USTs using a federal trust fund, as well
as state insurance and cleanup funds.
Region 4's USTs Program is responsible for the eight State area including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Some of the major responsibilities of the Region 4 UST Program are UST Program oversight, technical assistance and funding support. In addition, Region 4 is directly responsible for implementing the Federal Underground Storage Tank Program on Indian Lands within our eight State area and for implementing the Hazardous Substance Underground Storage Tank Program in Tennessee. The individual states are responsible for day-to-day implementation of the Federal and State UST Programs in all other cases.
