After graduating from Harvard in 1964, he became the research assistant for Scotty Reston, then the Washington bureau chief for The New York Times, and that led to a 25-year-career at the Times. He spent seven years as a senior writer at U.S. News and World Report and now teaches political science and journalism at George Washington University. He is a well-known commentator on radio and television and co-authored with his wife, Cokie, The New York Times best-seller From This Day Forward.
