Environmental Management System Implementation Policy (OARM, OAQPS & ORD)
EPA's mission is to protect human health and safeguard the natural environment by setting standards for environmental protection, assisting others in reducing or preventing pollution, conducting environmental research, sharing environmental information and enforcing environmental standards. To be effective in this mission, we must properly manage the environmental impacts of our own operations and facilities.
EPA encourages industries, business and other organizations to improve their environmental performance by using environmental management systems (EMSs) that focus on compliance, pollution prevention and public outreach.
EPA at Research Triangle Park is the Agency's largest operation outside of Washington, D.C. – in terms of people, buildings, land and laboratories. As such, we recognize our obligation and opportunity to lead by example.
With this policy, EPA at Research Triangle Park commits to implement EMSs for our own employees, operations and facilities. We will endeavor to become leaders in executing model EMSs for our multiple organizations and operations.
We commit to reduce our environmental impacts, limit our natural resource consumption, and comply with all regulatory requirements. Our cooperative EMS framework for EPA at Research Triangle Park will address the following goals:
- develop EMS partnerships among all EPA-RTP organizations
- meet or exceed all environmental regulatory requirements
- constantly improve our collective environmental performance
- prevent pollution and reduce resource consumption by improving daily operations
- consider environmental impacts in all planning, procurement and operating decisions
- establish, track and review environmental performance goals
- involve and educate employees in making environmental improvements
- partner with community stakeholders and share information on our EMS with the public
