Research Project: EFFECTS OF PLANT PARASITIC NEMATODE DENSITIES OF GRAPEVINE ESTABLISHMENT - DEVELOPMENT OF DAMAGE THRESHOLDS

Location: Horticultural Crops Research

Project Number: 5358-12220-003-02
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 11, 2006
End Date: Sep 30, 2009

Objective:
1. Evaluate the effect of two species of plant parasitic nematode densities (Meloidogyne hapla and Xiphinema pachticum) on vine establishment on two grape varieties, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. 2. Develop nematode damage thresholds for the above varieties during the vine establishment period in Washington State and provide growers with knowledge that will lead to appropriate management practices.

Approach:
Rooted cuttings from Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes will be planted in 30-gallon pots that will be buried in a fumigated field, pot-in-pot trial. Low, moderate, and high densities of root knot and dagger nematodes will be introduced in separate pots. The pots will be distributed randomly in the field. Soil samples will be collected in the fall and spring. Berry weight will be collected in the fall. In addition, pruning weight will be collected in the winter. Data from the pots containing nematodes will be compared with the non-infected controls using Analysis of Variance and regression analysis. Documents SCA with Washington State University. Formerely 5358-12220-002-15S (8/2007).
