Description: The Middle-Brook Regional Health Commission (MBRHC) of NJ has a cable show, “Public Health Matters,” offering public health information on public access television. The month of May is Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month and the Pediatric/Adult Asthma Coalition of NJ (PACNJ) was invited to discuss asthma, especially in children.

Program Schedule: In towns served by Piscataway Community TV, “Public Health Matters” airs Tuesday afternoons at 1:00 pm and Thursday evenings at 8:30 pm. Check your local listings!
The program is produced by Piscataway Community Television (PCTV), which serves 11 towns in Central Jersey. With the addition of Warren Media also airing the program, Public Health Matters will be available in each town served by the Commission.

Event: May Mondays Make Breathing Easier

Description: Each Monday a fact sheet addressing asthma management and directing them to the PACNJ Web site for more information is sent via e-mail to all PACNJ members and guests in our list serves. The email invites recipients to send the e-mail and fact sheet to all the people on their list serves and to print and distribute it to the people they serve. We have done this the past two years with amazing success as demonstrated by the leap in Web site hits for the month of May. Topics have included the PACNJ Asthma Treatment Plan, Asthma in the Child Care Setting, Top Ten Lists to Control Asthma Triggers, and Asthma Management in the School Setting.

Event: Newark Asthma-Friendly School Awards

Description: Newark is the largest urban district in New Jersey with 81 schools. Each school has completed the six steps necessary to qualify for the PACNJ Asthma-Friendly School Award. This event is a ceremony with guest speakers from the USEPA-Region 2, NJ Dept. of Health and Senior Services, and the Office of Minority and Multicultural Affairs, delivering the awards. There will be over 150 school nurses and school administrators attending. The six steps include asthma education for the school nurses and another program for the school faculty, a no idling pledge for school buses, and attending the IAQ Tools for Schools training and implementing and Indoor Air Quality Team in each school. This program is funded through a Cooperative Agreement from the USEPA, Region 2.

Event: Asthma Olympics

Description: This athletic competition provides children with asthma an opportunity to have fun participating in track and field events while learning about their asthma and how to better manage it. Participants, ages 5-12, rotate through sporting events as well as educational stations manned by health care professionals, learning about peak flow meters and metered dose inhalers, as well as general asthma management. The events are publicized through local media; notices are sent to area schools. Participants receive a t-shirt, a medal, and nutritious snacks.
