Description: | On World Asthma Day, we will set up an information center in the lobby of the hospital. Three Community Health Educators (two English speaking and one Spanish speaking) and two additional members of our Pediatric Asthma Intervention group will man the table from 7:30 am – 4:00 pm. Our Health Educators will distribute brochures and answer questions about asthma symptoms and how to best control asthma. In addition to the Informational Table, we will also provide an educational lunchtime lecture by our staff Pediatric Pulmonologist, Dr. Deepak Jajoo, on the basics of asthma and its management. During the lecture, we will provide a table staffed with a Spanish interpreter to accommodate our Spanish-speaking participants. |

Description: | PCMC Asthma Education Center will have two nationally certified asthma educators available to discuss asthma and asthma control. In an informal setting, educators will discuss on an individual basis such things as proper use of equipment including various inhalers, spacers, peak flow meters, and nebulizers. Disease process, triggers, and medications will also be discussed. Free lung screening and educational materials will be available for the public. The public is asked to bring their asthma equipment with them for the educators to check their technique. |

Description: | Olympic Great, World and Olympic Heptathlon Record Holder, Jackie Joyner-Kersee will lead a 1 mile and 5K walk in Forest Park to help bring awareness to asthma. Diagnosed while in college, Joyner-Kersee trained, competed, won medals, broke records and soared to great heights despite her on-going battle with asthma. Proceeds from the walk will benefit the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation.Joyner-Kersee plans to kick-off the event at 8:15 am by sharing her personal struggles and success of competing against what she calls her “most challenging opponent.” Jackie says, “Our quality of life should not be diminished because we have asthma.” |
