HEALTH & NUTRITION
- The annual prevalence of
current smoking among U.S. adults declined from 24.7% in 1997 to
19.7% in 2007.
- Non-Hispanic white adults and
non-Hispanic black adults were more likely than Hispanic adults
to be current smokers. The age-sex-adjusted prevalence of
current smoking was 12.7% for Hispanic persons, 22.1% for
non-Hispanic white persons, and 19.4% for non-Hispanic black
persons.
- The annual percentage of
adults who had five or more drinks in 1 day at least once in the
past year has remained stable over the past decade, ranging from
19.1% to 21.4%.
- In 2007, 30.8% of U.S. adults
aged 18 years and over engaged in regular leisure-time physical
activity, which was not significantly different from the 2006
estimate of 30.9%. The annual percentages of adults aged
18 years and over who engaged in regular leisure-time physical
activity increased from 29.8% in 1998 to 31.9% in 2001, did not
change significantly from 2001 to 2003, decreased from 2003 to
2004, and did not change significantly from 2004 to 2007.

HEALTH INSURANCE

43.1 million Americans
of all ages were uninsured in 2007 (14.5 percent of the
population.) An estimated 8.9 percent of children under age 18
had no health insurance in 2007 –- the lowest percentage of
uninsured children in the past decade.

In 2004-2006, the New
England region had the lowest percentage of uninsured
individuals under age 65 in 2004-2006 and the Southwest had the
highest. Overall, 91.1 percent of New Englanders had some kind
of health insurance in 2004-2006. The Southwest had the greatest
proportion of uninsured -– 18.2 percent of children and nearly
30 percent of adults.
