SMASCH PROJECT

Specimen MAnagement System for California Herbaria

The SMASCH project, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), has completed the development of a database of text data and images of specimens that document the distribution and classification of the plants of California. The project began in 1992. Information from over 300,000 specimens has been entered.

The web interface to SMASCH data is being modified as review of images and other data is proceeding.

The present interface, which requires a recent version of the Netscape (>= 4.04) or Internet Explorer (>= 5.0) browsers, is available:

for accession records,
Query by scientific or common name, restricted by county, collector, date of collection, or collection number; return accession records
for collecting-event data,
Query by county, collector, date of collection; return reference to all specimens, grouped by locality and date.
for county-level distribution,
Query by scientific or common name; return county-level distribution map. The distribution of up to three taxa may be compared. Navigate to accession records.

Technical documents concerning the SMASCH project are available:

You can contact us about special requests and / or progress on the SMASCH redesign by sending e-mail to the SMASCH project.
