1997 CASA Teen Survey

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse’s (CASA) Commission on Substance Abuse Among America’s Adolescents has released the results of their third annual national survey of teens and their parents. The report, Substance Abuse and the American Adolescent, reveals that the age at which children are beginning to smoke cigarettes daily, drink alcohol, and use marijuana and other illegal drugs, including cocaine and hallucinogens like LSD, is the youngest ever. The report also finds that the use of alcohol and drugs in early and mid-adolescence interferes with physical, intellectual and emotional development, as well as increases the chances of accidents, illness and death.
