POSITION: Research Biochemist/ Microbiologist

LOCATION: Beltsville, Maryland

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Nutrient Requirements & Functions Laboratory, Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, Beltsville, Maryland is seeking an individual for a 2 year appointment to conduct research on the role of natural products in the function of insulin. Work will involve chromium and polyphenols from cinnamon. Research will focus on: 1) determining the requirements and mechanisms of action for chromium and other insulin potentiating natural products and 2) implementation of molecular methods to quantitate proteins and genes involved in insulin signaling and function. Western immunoblotting will be used to ascertain changes in the insulin receptors and related proteins and 3) the role of native and modified insulin potentiating compounds from cinnamon and other natural products that enhance the activity of insulin.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in biochemistry or related field required. Knowledge and experience in protein chemistry, Western immunoblotting and insulin signaling is desired. Experience in cell culture techniques, PCR, kinase assays and glucose transport preferred.
