Program Description
The Palau Ministry of Health Division of Environmental Health’s
PCEHDP plans to implement vector control and prevention activities
that will focus on the reduction of vectorborne diseases. Specific
proposed activities include implementation of comprehensive rat
surveillance, enhancement of dengue fever and Leptospirosis
surveillance and control activities, improvement of existing
environmental health workforce by building capacity, improvement of
overall state sanitation scores within all Palauan states, and
planning for and ensuring sustainability of project activities
within each state sanitation department.
PCEHDP will conduct a rodent density survey pilot project for baseline data on rodent density. The project will include the Palau integrated pest management (IPM) intervention. PCEHDP will analyze the data and evaluate and improve the Palau IPM Intervention before implementation throughout the Republic of Palau.
Accomplishments
Successful State Collaborations (Government and Residents)
Successful Collaborations With Other Agencies
Intervention
Barriers
Two main barriers to this project’s success were funding reductions
and the procurement process. The procurement process has improved
since January 2006, when the local vendor requirement was eliminated
for off-island orders.
What Is Next
PCEHDP is expected to meet its modified goals and objectives over
the next 18 months.
The final outcome will be implementation of Palau Integrated Pest
Management (Palau IPM) throughout Palau. Palau IPM is IPM that
incorporates comprehensive household sanitation improvement and
household health education and promotion.
National Transferability
Palau IPM can be implemented throughout the world.
