This report presents data from the 1999 National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS). The survey has been conducted continuously by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) since 1965. National estimates of hospital use derived from the NHDS are published for each calendar year by NCHS. This report provides a summary of the 1999 data, including estimates of diagnoses and procedures by International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) code number.

Data Highlights:
bullet graphic
During 1999 an estimated 32.1 million inpatients were discharged from non-Federal short-stay hospitals. These patients used an estimated 160.1 million days of care.
bullet graphicIn 1999 almost one-half of inpatients were discharged from hospitals with less than 200 beds, while about 10 percent were discharged from hospitals with 500 or more beds.
bullet graphicHeart disease was the most common diagnosis among inpatients 65 years of age and over, accounting for 23 percent of their discharges.
bullet graphicFour surgical procedures were performed 1 million times or more: cardiac catheterization, repair of current obstetric laceration, episiotomy, and removal of coronary artery obstruction insertion of stent(s).
bullet graphicAn estimated 3.7 million newborn infants were discharged from short-stay hospitals after average stays of 3.2 days.
